Designing in Small Spaces

Are you one of the many people who have chosen to live in a home with a more practical and efficient use of space? Perhaps you live in an inner-city neighborhood where apartments are smaller. Or, maybe you just don't want to have to maintain a large living space. Some people have gone one step further and chosen to live in a “Tiny house”. Regardless of the reason, this poses a challenge for those who would like to decorate those smaller spaces. After all, small doesn't have to mean stark. To that end, here are some helpful design tips for smaller spaces.

Use light colors

It is a generally known fact that light colors make a room look bigger and brighter. Light and bright walls are more reflective, making a space feel open and airy, which helps maximize the effect created by natural light. Dark colors, on the other hand, tend to absorb light, making a room look smaller.

Window treatments

Sometimes people cover their best asset in a small room, the windows, with curtains or blinds, usually for one of three reasons: 1) the window is unattractive, or 2) the view is not something they want to view, or 3) they want privacy. Since windows add space to any room, what can you do? One option is to consider a glass panel, like the Victorian Arbor stained glass panel shown above. This provides a measure of privacy and still allows an abundance of light to bathe your smaller space.

Use mirrors

With mirrors you can introduce a pop of color, such as the elegant Valentino Mirror, without causing your room to appear smaller. Each panel will bathe your room with light, especially if you hang it on a wall opposite from a window!

Use ceiling or wall lights

If you want the elegance of a chandelier, but don't have the room for a large fixture, flush mounted lighting can be a huge design tip. The Vanderbilt 6 Light Flush Mount blends classic styling and modern design that will add grace and charm to any home.

Vinyl floor coverings

Vintage floor coverings are a refreshing alternative for decorating in small spaces! The only installation is to lay it down, and you’re done! Change your mind, and want to move it to another room? No problem! They feature wonderful vintage designs that are printed on durable, certified non-slip vinyl. Best of all; they can be order in small sizes and they will add design without taking space!
